Dog/cat retail store in Old Colorado City opens grooming business a block away
Pleased with the Old Colorado City location, the couple recently opened a Grooming Salon & Day Spa a block away. It's in a 1,200-square-foot upstairs suite in the west wing of the Old Town Plaza commercial center, 2501 W. Colorado Ave. Some Westsiders may remember the space as the former home of Mary Purinsh's Westside Family Dentistry (now at 1330 W. Colorado Ave.) “We've been looking at getting into grooming for a while,” Molly Smith said. Having the salon and store within short walking distance allows easy referrals back and forth between them, she noted. The salon is open to the general public. The Smiths also work with National Mill Dog Rescue in Colorado Springs, providing grooming services for the dogs that the organization takes in. Grooming can be an issue with such animals, who are often kept in wire cages, Molly said, and as breeder dogs can have their health needs neglected. The salon's master groomer is Kat Salemi, who has 12 years experience and has been certified through the National Dog Groomers Association of America. The salon is open to all dog breeds and will be operated with the same philosophy as Republic of Paws retail store, which seeks to “build relationships” with people and their pets. “We want to see that the dog is comfortable and well taken care of,” Molly said. Starting in January, the salon will include a technician with seven years experience, who is also trained in grooming cats, she pointed out. Other available services at the salon are bath & tidy, relaxation massage, laser therapy, a “pawdicure,” and anesthesia-free dental work, the website states. Salon hours are Mondays through Fridays, with Saturdays by appointment only. For more information, call the salon at 445-6634, or visit republicofpaws.com/spa.
