Experienced glassblower sets up shop in Old Colorado City

Working outside his shop during an Old Colorado City event, glassblower Garret Oaks creates a new piece of art.

After nearly 10 years of practice and experience, glassblower Garret Oaks has started his own business in the Old Colorado Square commercial center in Old Colorado City.
       Oaks Glass Gallery and Studio sells his creations; he also gives lessons.
       The business at 2616 W. Colorado Ave., Suite 16, is open Tuesday to Sunday.
       Oaks said he got interested in glassblowing as a boy, fascinated by the care that's required to make a good piece and avoid mistakes.
       While in the military in New Mexico, he found a college that offered classes. He pursued the discipline after leaving the service, working seven years part-time and two years full-time.
       He decided Old Colorado City would be a good location because glassblowing “fits the unique culture” of the historic shopping district, he said.
