Upset win – CHS volleyball to state
Coronado High, a perennial state power in volleyball, had a slightly off-year by its standards, but still won the Metro League and then unexpectedly qualified for state last weekend with an upset victory over Battle Mountain (21-2) in the Region 5 tournament.
With an 18-7 overall record, the Lady Cougars will be the 12th (lowest seed) in pool-play competition starting at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 in the Denver Coliseum. Their pool includes Lewis-Palmer, the state's top seed in Division 4A. (Divisions are determined by enrollment.) Coronado, ranked 20th in the state going into regionals, beat Battle Mountain (ranked 5th) on its home court. A report in the Vail Daily newspaper singled out the play of Coronado players Alexia Morey, Julia Ward, LaRose Currie, Mackenzie Ellison and Madison Brown. Westside Pioneer/press release |
