“That's my favorite transformer.”
This cheery conversation was overheard between a Coronado High student and a small trick-or-treater in Old Colorado City the afternoon of Oct. 31. It was followed by the bestowing of goodies into Optimus' bag before he hurried along to the next giveaway station.
There were certainly plenty to choose from, with at least two dozen CHS students spread along the street to augment the handouts from merchants at most stores as part of the annual Safe Treats event on Halloween.
In addition this year, close to 10 mascots from area businesses - including the Coronado Cougar and Sox the Fox of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox - roamed the streets and joined in the fun.
“I like it,” said long-time merchant Howard Walters, standing at the doorway to his Just for You shop, with his candy bowl nearby. He noted that it's a fun way for kids to trick or treat, and “it's good PR for Old Colorado City.”
The annual Safe Treats was organized this year by Judy and Lori Kasten of Kasten Accounting, with major funding assistance from Pikes Peak National Bank and the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) merchants group.
Lured either by tradition or citywide advertising efforts, hundreds of young trick-or-treaters and their parents trundled along either side of Colorado Avenue between 24th and 27th streets during the roughly two-hour event. A costume competition followed.
