This has been corrected, at least as far as Bill Osborne is concerned. Bonnie and Harold Smith, who were members of the Jimmy Camp Sportsman Club with the Osbornes, provided a photo this week, clipped from a 1971 newspaper, showing Osborne with three other club volunteers who had led the refurbishing of 35 trash barrels for state campgrounds. (The outdoor/community service club existed from 1958 until it disbanded this year, the Smiths said.)
The Osborne Fund, which was created by Bill Osborne upon his death in 1985, annually provides well over $100,000 to agencies that serve the needy on the Westside and up Ute Pass. The Osbornes had owned a Rexall drug store in Old Colorado City. Their volunteer activity included the Garden of the Gods Rotary Club, to which Osborne left the responsibility of administering the fund's interest income distributions.
“I wish I had a picture of Betty,” Bonnie Smith said. “They were a neat couple.”
This year, 13 groups will receive $133,000 from the fund, according to Jean Foran, the club's fund administrator.
