OCC plans big day around 12th annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off Oct. 22

So big, in fact, that the word “giant” is an adjective for nearly every activity that day in the historic district between 24th and 27th streets.
But the biggest of them all, literally and figuratively, will be the 12th annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off in the Old Town Plaza parking lot. The event is sanctioned through the national Great Pumpkin Commonwealth organization. Last year featured an OCC record, when Marc Sawtelle's winning monster topped the scales at 1,338 pounds.
Typically the height of the weighing work - moving from the lightest to the heaviest-looking entries as they're placed on the scales by a forklift - occurs between about noon and 1:30 p.m.
With the weigh-off traditionally attracting hundreds of curious spectators, the other activities are aimed at giving those people additional things to do in Old Colorado City. Like the weigh-off, nearly all are free.
Included are a Kids' Zone near Lorig's on the south side of the 2600 block, outdoor entertainers, sidewalk sales, merchant-made scarecrows and a “Spirit Tour” to sample alcoholic refreshments at nine participating Old Town locations.
The tour has a $20 charge, with proceeds supporting the pumpkin event costs, according to the Spirit Tour facebook page.
