Cash prizes go to the top three places. Pumpkins weighing more than 1,000 pounds are not unusual. The organizer is the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) business group, which ties the festival in with marketing for the Historic District. Another attraction Oct. 17, also from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be the Wizard of Oz-themed “Giant Kids Zone” in the open area by 2611 W. Colorado Ave. Included will be games, face-painting, costume contests, pumpkin-picking, pumpkin-decorating, a fire pit and music by the Wallbaum Band. During the day, outside various shops along the avenue, merchant-made scarecrows will be on display. Prizes will go to the winners, and visitors to Old Colorado City will be the judges this year, according to OCCA event organizer Pam Gressett. They can vote for their favorites by going to the OCCA Facebook page. Helping OCCA sponsor the Giant Festival are Springs Trampoline, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Colon Orchard and Century Casino in Cripple Creek, Gressett said.
