City sets fire mitigation meeting for Midland neighborhood Sept. 29

Firefighters provided a chipping service for the annual Dump and Donate event sponsored by Harris Realty June 6 in the Coronado High School parking lot. The city also offers chipping on a pre-scheduled basis throughout the year for the 110 neighborhoods in what's called the "wildland urban interface."

       Residents south of Highway 24 and west of 21st Street are invited to a City Fire Department wildfire mitigation meeting Tuesday, Sept. 29.
       The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Gold Hill Police Substation, 955 W. Moreno St.
       Traditionally known as the Midland area, the mostly residential neighborhood is referred to as “Bott Park” (named after a park off South 26th Street) in promotional materials sent out by the Fire Department.
       In any event, the neighborhood - which borders city and county open space - is one of 110 in Colorado Springs that city officials have identified as being at higher risk of fire because of proximity to open mountain areas. The formal term is “wildland urban interface.”
       The intent of the meeting is to explain what that identification means to Midland residents (such as mitigation grant opportunities), what city services are available (such as individual consultation and scheduled neighborhood chipping dates) and what the city itself is doing to reduce wildland fire danger (such as a seasonal crew to cut back excess vegetation), according to a Westside Pioneer interview with Amy Sylvester, the city's wildfire mitigation program coordinator.
