Giant crane looms on Mesa as Springs Utilities' new water tank takes shape

Why, it's been helping build a 5-million-gallon water tank for Colorado Springs Utilities south of Uintah Street, off Manitou Boulevard.
Work by contractor Garney Construction started this summer, and the structure is now framed to approximately its full size. It's being built about 200 feet southeast of the old tank, which is more than 50 years old and will be demolished once the new unit is operational, plans state.
The location is what's known as the Little Mesa Water Tank Site - 17 acres that Utilities owns just east of Manitou Boulevard.
Springs Utilities is a city-owned enterprise, providing water, wastewater, gas and electric services to the metro area. The tank supplies treated water to the residents of southwest Colorado Springs.
The replacement is needed for several reasons, Utilities officials have explained, including increasing maintenance issues with the old tank and water-storage improvements since the early 1960s, when the old one was built.
The project is expected to have little impact on the public, other than additional trucks coming and going off Manitou Boulevard. There will be no impact on water service, nor will user rates be affected as a result, according to Utilities.
