Long detour around segment of 19th Street undergoing water-line work

a water-line project for Colorado Springs Utilities at Oswego and 19th streets. For

Roughly an eighth of a mile long, the segment is 19th Street, from Oswego and King streets to Mesa Road.
The shortest driving detour around the project, via Uintah street, is about a mile and a half in length. People who live in the construction zone are allowed access.
In a scheduled contract with Colorado Springs Utilities, Beers and Brock Construction is replacing an existing 6-inch water main with an 8-inch line, according to the foreman on site. His estimate of mid-September is weather-dependent, he added. Work started July 14.
The project will ensure that all the necessary underground utilities upgrades are in place before the city repaves that part of 19th Street, he said
That paving, funded by the voter-approved 2C “road tax” program, could happen as early as 2017, according to previous city information.
The new, larger water line - replacing the former, corrosion-vulnerable cast iron with more durable PVC plastic - should improve customer service, the foreman said.
The 6-inch line was installed in 1958, a Colorado Springs Utilities spokesperson said.
