Sheriff's Office organizes Westside educational/resource event July 6-7

       Westsiders will have various chances to interface with law enforcement during a free, two-day event sponsored by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7.
       Called “Park, Walk and Talk” (PWT), it's meant to “offer outreach, education and resources for the community,” according to Sheriff's Office Lt. Lori Harrell.
As it did in April 2015 (photo above), the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Mobile Command Post will park in the Old Town Propane parking lot in the 2700 block of West Colorado Avenue July 6-7.

Such events are scheduled periodically by the Sheriff's Office in different parts of the county, she said.
       An event flyer adds the tagline, “Get to know your local law enforcement agency!”
       Activities are scheduled in five locations; in addition, the Sheriff's Office's Mobile Command Post vehicle will be parked in West Colorado Avenue's 2700 block both days from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and people are invited to drop by for a tour and/or to ask questions.
       Based on the flyer and supplemental information from Harrell, the following summarizes PWT's scheduled activities:
  • July 6, from 8 to 10 a.m. Business Forum/Business Watch - a session geared for business owners, in which they can ask question of or get tips from S.O. crime prevention officer Brent Ambuehl. Location - Paravicini's Italian Bistro (Sopra), 2802 W. Colorado Ave.
  • July 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Coffee with a Cop - an informal gathering, in which the public is welcome to drop by and talk to local law officers. Location - the Mason Jar restaurant, 2925 W. Colorado Ave.
  • July 7, from 8 to 9 a.m., R.E.A.C.T. (acronym for "rapidly evolving active crisis training") - a seminar by Sheriff's deputies to advise citizens on what to do in various types of emergency situations after they've called 911 and are waiting for responders to arrive. Location - Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St.
  • July 7, from 9 to 11 a.m., Community/Neighborhood Forum - a question/answer session on local issues with a panel slated to consist of Sheriff's Office Commander (soon to be Bureau Chief) Clif Northam, District 3 Colorado Springs City Councilmember Richard Skorman, District 3 County Commissioner Stan VanderWerf, City Homeless Coordinator Andrew Phelps and Lori Jarvis of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Location - Westside Community Center.
  • July 7, from noon to 2 p.m., Resource Fair, featuring information booths by homeless/low-income providers (including Westside CARES, Community Partnership for Child Development, Peak Vista and the Springs Rescue Mission). Location - parking lot outside Old Town Propane Company, 2725 W. Colorado Ave.
