‘Genny Garden’ returns for a fifth year at Thorndale

The “Genny Garden” is back for a fifth year. Karen Sucharski began planting the first of about 900 flowers May 31 in the 396-square-foot plot at the southeast corner of at Thorndale Park at Uintah and 23rd streets.        The volunteer task is part of the city's Springs in Bloom program, in which groups can adopt public flower gardens.        Thorndale's plot has been adopted by the “Family and Friends of Genny” every year since Springs in Bloom started in 2004. It memorializes Genny Sucharski, Karen's daughter, who died in a car crash in 2000.        This year, Karen said the group plans to try again with a yin-yang design, like last year, hoping they can do a better maintenance job.        The flower types will be different this year - marigold, wizard coleus and white alyssum, she said.        Also May 31... Volunteers at Sacred Heart Church, 2021 W. Pikes Peak, were planting flowers along the sidewalk in front. Volunteers Roger and Tracy Miller said it was part of an overall church cleanup.
