Meet a Westsider:
Martha Thompson
Profession/Occupation...

What I like most about the Westside is... Without question, the people. There is such a strong sense of community on the Westside! We are an extended family here. If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... I’d love to see a few more community gardens here! We are (I believe) a really progressive group on the Westside. We could have gardens for every few blocks, making it easier and more accessible for all. A good movie I’ve seen recently is... Best movie in a long time was “Lincoln.” I believe that we need to know where we’ve been to understand how to best move forward. I'd like to discover... Oh, if I had a magic wand, there are many things I’d like to discover! Closest to my heart is a cure for Parkinson’s Disease. My brother was diagnosed with it a few years ago, and I’ve watched its cruel progression. If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... This one’s easy: Einstein! I fell in love with mathematics in college. Math and physics are in everything, and hold the mysteries of the universe. I love the way he thought, his curiosity, and the fact that he knew that God was key to every equation. I want to know how God thinks, too! The next time I travel, I’m going... The next time I travel, I hope we go to Maui. My husband has never been to the Hawaiian Islands, so it would be wonderful to explore them with him. Being a native Californian, I’m a real water baby. I love to swim and snorkel, and the beaches are fantastic! My favorite childhood memory is... Anytime with my horse, Liebschoen. My father took me to an auction to choose any horse I wanted. He was standing alone, had been abused and starved, and was 20 years old. I saw the need and the immense kindness in his eyes. Twenty-five dollars later, he was mine. My mother and I nursed him back to health and we were inseparable. My favorite spring pastime is... going anywhere for walks with our dogs, Maddie and Max. It’s always an adventure, and even better listening to the birds, seeing and smelling all the new growth of flowers and trees. Something good I’ve read is... “Sober Mercies: How Love Caught Up With a Christian Drunk,” by Heather Kopp. We interviewed Heather for our first show. We’ve all had someone we love who has struggled with alcoholism, and Heather takes her reader through that journey and into recovery. My pet peeve is... lying. Seriously, what is the point? We need to be ourselves. If someone doesn’t like it, get it out in the open now. Be who you are and don’t edit yourself. Whoever you lie to will find out eventually anyway. There’s just no reason or excuse! If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... I’m doing it! I had back surgery two years ago and am still not able to work a regular schedule. So my husband came up with the idea of Rocky Mountain Views, and that’s workable for me. It’s fun, interesting, and we get to meet amazing people! Enjoy living on the Westside? You can tell the world why! Call our ‘Meet a Westsider’ editor at 471-6776. |
