Westside hosting 15 caucuses each for Democrats, Republicans

       Voting Precincts 101 through 115 take in Westside neighborhoods. Both Democrats and Republicans will hold their caucuses -- one in each precinct -- Tuesday, March 4, starting at 7 p.m..
       The county has more than 170 precincts in all.
       Caucuses are considered a “grassroots” step in the process of the parties choosing candidates to run for state and county offices in the election Nov. 4. They are typically used to sign up delegates for the county and/or state assemblies as well as to take straw polls on candidates in some of the races.
       Anyone can attend a caucus, but active participation is only allowed for people who have registered with their party before Jan. 6.
       The caucuses will be followed up by the individual parties' county assemblies -- March 22 for the Democrats, March 29 for the Republicans, at which the caucus-chosen delegates will decide the party's candidates for the different offices.
       The assembly could choose more than one candidate for a given office; they would then run against each other in the party primary June 24.
       Candidates can also bypass the caucus/assembly route and seek to petition onto the primary ballot.
