Fund-raising underway for Old Colorado City Library rehabilitation

It’s been a century now since famous businessman Andrew Carnegie built the Old Colorado City Branch Library, and it’s getting
spruced up for the occasion. Foundation work was accomplished in 2003, and this spring should see replacements of aging windows, doors and steps, according to Branch Manager Julianne Rist. But more extensive repairs are needed, she said, and the library is trying to raise $300,000 from private sources – to match a Colorado Historical Society grant of $149,000 – so the work can be completed. “We’re in the midst of a preservation campaign,” Rist said, noting that it’s been nearly a quarter of a century since the last major upgrade of the venerable building at 2418 W. Pikes Peak Ave. The off-street parking lot just west of the library – including a wheelchair ramp/access – was added in 1993, but no building work occurred at that time.
