Pizza Hut on West Colorado closes after 23 years; new store at West Wind
“They swapped us out,” one employee cheerfully summarized in an informal conversation. Another employee said that the main reasons for the change were the unpredictability of the tourist market in the Manitou/Westside area and a change in customer habits - preferring pizza to go or to pick up rather than eating it in a restaurant. Franchise owner Steve Patton added in a follow-up phone call that it was part of a “strategic move” to serve the Rockrimmon area. As a free-standing building in the parking lot near Safeway, the West Colorado Pizza Hut had offered at least a dozen tables for dine-in along with pick-up and delivery services.
Prominent signs at the location Jan. 3 stated that the restaurant was closed and referred people to the West Wind site. There was no statement about the future of the building itself. The property it sits on belongs to a Kansas company named Colorado Peaks LLC, according to the assessor's info. Located among a line of strip commercial storefronts in the West Wind center (which is anchored by Albertson's and Ace Hardware), the new Pizza Hut consists of remodeled space with a relatively small indoor lobby, a counter to place orders and a kitchen in back. The address is 4131 Centennial Blvd. The phone is 634-6760. The Pizza Hut website states that the business was founded by two brothers over half a century ago, and it's now the “largest pizza company in the world.”
